Explore diverse opportunities at CITIID designed to enhance your skills and develop your career.

At CITIID, we are keen to support early career researchers and to build a thriving, inclusive research environment that empowers our people at all career stages.

Sponsorship for Early Career Research Award

CITIID invites applications for sponsorship for an early career research award, such as a Wellcome Trust or Medical Research Council Career Development Award, or European Research Council Starting Grant.

The award will be held in CITIID, either within the Jeffrey Cheah Biomedical Centre or within the University of Cambridge Department of Medicine Molecular Immunity Unit, housed within the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to visit the institute to deliver a seminar and participate in a chalk talk to present their research plans. This process is designed to ensure a transparent, inclusive, and fair selection.

We are seeking two early-career investigators with an outstanding track record in the fields of immunology or infectious diseases, compelling research plans that complement ongoing work at CITIID, and a strong commitment to contributing to a positive, collaborative research environment. We will provide advice and mentoring for the successful candidates to develop and submit a competitive award application from their current position. The successful candidates will be provided with research space for the duration of the CDA, a local mentor, access to PhD and MPhil students, and matched seed funding for equipment to strengthen the CDA proposal.

How to apply:

Applications including CV and cover letter (Max 3 sides, including proposed research project) to be submitted to Dimple Patel by 29 July 2025.

Successful candidates will be informed of shortlisting by 11 August 2025. Talk and chalk-talk visit day is 12 September 2025.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Professor Menna Clatworthy, Director of CITIID.

CAST Work Experience programme

CITIID offers 1 week work experience placements to year 10 and year 12 students at CAST (Cambridge Academy of Science and Technology).

Our first batch of year 12 students visited in March 2025 (host labs; Wilson, Rihn, Lyons and McKinney). Students spent their week shadowing researchers, gaining insights into experimental design and techniques including flow cytometry, DNA preparation, molecular cloning, tissue culture and data modelling, and finished the week with a lunch with their labs. Researchers supervising CAST students include Imogin Winfield (Lyons), Lianne Wu and Zhuonan Li (Wilson and Rihn) Daniel Griffiths (McKinney).

Having a CAST student was a great experience for everyone: they were understandably a bit uncertain on day one, but visibly increased in confidence through the week and were engaging in lively discussions by the end. I think other researchers in the lab also benefitted from being pushed to explain their work and to supervise some fresh, enthusiastic students.
