CAST Work Experience programme
CITIID offers 1 week work experience placements to year 10 and year 12 students at CAST (Cambridge Academy of Science and Technology).
Our first batch of year 12 students visited in March 2025 (host labs; Wilson, Rihn, Lyons and McKinney). Students spent their week shadowing researchers, gaining insights into experimental design and techniques including flow cytometry, DNA preparation, molecular cloning, tissue culture and data modelling, and finished the week with a lunch with their labs. Researchers supervising CAST students include Imogin Winfield (Lyons), Lianne Wu and Zhuonan Li (Wilson and Rihn) Daniel Griffiths (McKinney).
Having a CAST student was a great experience for everyone: they were understandably a bit uncertain on day one, but visibly increased in confidence through the week and were engaging in lively discussions by the end. I think other researchers in the lab also benefitted from being pushed to explain their work and to supervise some fresh, enthusiastic students.
